Hey, It's Free.....

Here is what's on the menu for dinner tonight on Kwaj:

Mmmmm.....pork butt.

Most of the time the food is good here, it has it's moments and you learn quickly how to decipher the menu. For example, always be leery of the menu item "chef's choice". Typically that means they are trying to get rid of something that's about to expire. A few days ago it was turkey tails. Turkey tails!?! Savory is another deception. That is another word for smothered in gravy and it can be anything.

We just have to be creative, keep our guard up and remember; it's free.

Years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth I was an aerospace food service technician - ahem - enlisted cook in the Air Force stationed in Germany. Generally, we followed the Air Force Worldwide Menu rotation but there were occasions where we had to get rid of stuff before it expired. Yes, it truly is 'chef's choice'!!! (I retired my cook's whites, toque and apron shortly after I got out; still cook occasionally for family and friends.)

The best analogy about Kwaj food is like that on a Navy ship - relatively good food until they run out of the fresh items and have to resort to the canned stuff until the next port call or underway replenishment.

I think some of the menu items may have been 'lost in translation'. Truth in advertising, perhaps? :) I gotta agree with ya... keep your guard up and remember - it's free!

DEATH FROM WITHIN!!!! (The unofficial motto of the military cook!)
